Hemp is a plant that has been used for thousands of years for health, beauty and other purposes.
Hemp oil contains omega 3, omega 6 and GLA acids. Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) in this oil represents about 3% of all unsaturated fatty acids. GLA belongs to a group of essential acids (EFA = essential fatty acids) found primarily in vegetable oils. Although the EFA is necessary for our health, the body can not produce them by itself, so we have to produce them on their own, through food.
We were interested in how healthy hemp oil really is, so we asked for professional opinion from Dr. Darrell L. Tanelian.
Hemp oil is the only edible oil containing the immediate metabolites of linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid, namely gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and stearidonic acid (SDA).
It, therefore, prevents EFA metabolism from weakening and helps in achieving balance in the body, which is the result of genetic factors, other fat intake, aging and life habits.
High content of omega 6 and 3 fatty acids and a relatively high proportion of phytosterols are beneficial for the cardiovascular system. GLA has been shown to be effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and active inflammation of the joints. GLA and vitamin D in hemp are also useful in preventing and treating osteoporosis. In addition, products with many EFAs can help with skin irregularities, inflammation, scabies poor / slow healing of wounds; GLA is also useful for atopic eczema and psoriasis.
